Warning to all straight people, queer reading of a “canonically” straight relationship lies ahead! Be warned! Click away if you can’t stomach the gays! Okay, I’m done being sardonic. But now, a little message of love to the straights: If queer readings of canonically “straight” media or characters isn’t really your thing, I understand. However, I think the queer community’s ability to find subtext in media and entertainment is a really important part of our history, and was often a way in which queerness could be found or expressed during a time where it wasn't largely accepted. Dracula, Frankenstein, , queerness has always been monstrous (and if this interests you, you should read my essay on queer horror *wink* *wink*. Queerness is often coded as something to fear. Something to hide away in a dark castle, or a “closet” if you will... LOL. If you read this whole thing, and happen to be straight, I would love to hear your thoughts on some of these arguments. I feel, as a queer person, we are used to spotting these subtleties. These monstrous little secrets hidden away in our favorite horror icons. Maybe we saw ourselves in them a bit. Maybe we did that to feel less alone. But seeing these queer messages unpacked and laid out before you as someone not queer leads to an interesting perspective oft untold or looked into. Ultimately, to me, this movie delves into obsession, mania, teenage angst, and the blurred lines between friendship and desire.
